Hi gang,
I've retired this page in favour of a wiki entry at python.org. It's a bit more egalitarian, and in keeping with the spirit of a user group.
Thanks,
Anthony

| First Python User Group Meeting |
[03 Jun 2005|05:07pm] |
Hi All,
The first meeting is scheduled for June the 16th
I have official permission to use the slide room, projector, etc. at Intrepid, so that's the venue sorted out - unless anyone has any violent objections to Fitzroy?
Here's a link to the location: Intrepid Travel 12 Spring St, Fitzroy 16th June, 6.30pm
It's pretty close to the 96 and 112 tram, and only a short hop from Parliament station. Not too sure about parking, but there's a fair bit of street parking around, particularly after hours. There are also a large number of cafes and restaurants along Brunswick street.
If you haven't already RSVP'ed, please give me an indication of whether the location and time are ok and a *firm RSVP*.
Now's also the time to come forward if you would like to present a topic. I've got an idea for one if nobody else wants to, but I'd like to get at least the next few meetings squared away if I can.
If you're not sure on a topic, or don't want to give a presentation, perhaps you could give me an idea of topics or areas that you would like to hear about - that way I can encourage people who have that particular area of expertise. Some topics that have been suggested are:
PIL pygame pyopengl zope pypi distutils wxPython Twisted web/CGI Databases Unit Testing Patterns
If you feel qualified to give a talk/presentation on any of these, let me know and I'll schedule you in for a timeslot. I'm thinking that the schedule should run something like:
6.30 Stuff 7.30 Dinner 8.00-8.30 More Stuff 9.00-9.30 Hometime
For the first meeting, I guess the first part will get taken up with various organisey things. Here's a rough agenda:
Meet each other/figure out common areas of interest Time & Place? Meeting format - alternatives to just a presentation eg. Shorter 'news' items, code review?, Q&A session, group project, demos, "I don't want to be dictator for life" - getting other people to contribute a little bit Schedule other presentations Mailing list & web space
Then dinner.
Finally I'll give a talk on "Automation with Python" if I haven't roped anyone in to give a talk by then.

| Let's get the ball rolling... |
[25 May 2005|03:00pm] |
I've got a list of 17 people (including myself) who are interested, so it shouldn't be too hard to get started. Here's a short laundry list of things to think about. I'm mostly winging it, although I have been reading The Linux User Group HOWTO. If you've got any suggestions, feel free to send them my way, or add comments.
Where? - We need to pick a reasonable venue. I think probably somewhere close to the CBD would be a good idea - that way as many people north, south, east and west can join in on the fun. I may be able to use some facilities at work (in Spring Street, Fitzroy - close to Brunswick St for dinner), or we could pick a cafe or restaurant to start with and discuss it from there.
When? - the earlier the better I'd like to get things happening as quickly as possible, so the earlier we can schedule the first meeting the better, as far as I'm concerned.
The normal method seems to be the $Nth $WEEKday of each month, where N is 1st, 2nd, 3rd, last and WEEK is a day from Monday to Friday. If you can let me know (or add a comment) what days are good for you, we can pick a day. I'm not 100% on what days other user groups have got, but I'd like to try and pick a free day, so if there's anyone who knows offhand what days the linux, Perl, PHP and Zope groups have their meetings, we'll schedule to reduce conflicts.
What? - we need people to give presentations A couple of people have mentioned that the reason that the last group petered out was the lack of a structure with specific talks or a venue, so I'm keen to get a series of talks lined up over the next two or three months, so that there's some leeway and we don't run out of content. Anyone want to volunteer to give a talk? The other alternative is for me to Google for your field of expertise and volunteer you.
So please add a comment covering those three questions; give us an idea of the When and Where that are good for you. If you don't have an idea for the What, try and suggest a topic that you'd be interested in - chances are that someone here knows something about it, and if there's enough demand you could inspire someone to run something.
